Thailand is a country of incredible splendor and beauty. From shimmering Buddhist temples, to quiet beaches and the bustling streets of Bangkok, it's no wonder why Thailand has been a foreigner's travel paradise for hundreds of years. However, due to the luck of history and the power of past kings, Thailand has remained South East Asia's only country to never have been colonized; therefore, never losing a stitch of its cultural integrity. The rolling lush mountains of the north, the rich green rice paddies of the east and some of the world's most beautiful beaches in the south make Thailand one of the most amazing travel destinations on Earth. After indulging in world-renowned Thai cuisine, taking a wild "tuk-tuk" ride through the streets of Bangkok and experiencing the Thai "patient heart" first hand, one begins to realize what is behind that famous Thai smile.
The vast majority of Thailand's 60 million people are Theravada Buddhists. Throughout history Thais have always been accepting of other religions and cultures and built a society on strong moral principles and tolerance. The literal translation of "Thai" is freedom. Following world war two, while many South East Asian countries fell to communism and harsh dictatorships, Thailand shined as a beacon of freedom and democracy within the region. However, like many countries, Thailand stumbled during its coming of age and still requires the support of willing volunteers to assist in its development. Through this rich history and the brave struggle of its past, Thailand has become one of world's most rewarding countries to volunteer and travel."
Why Does Thailand Need Volunteers?
Between 1988 and 1996, Thailand's poverty levels dropped from about 33 percent of the population to about 11 percent, translating to more than 1 million people being lifted out of poverty each year. But with the onset of the financial crisis in 1997 an additional 3 million people became poor, with the incidence of poverty climbing to 16 percent in 1999. As poverty in the rural areas worsened, many people could not afford to send their children beyond the 6 years of compulsory schooling, making them unqualified for higher paying jobs in the manufacturing and service sectors. As a result, these families have become trapped in the vicious cycle of continued poverty. By volunteering as a teacher in Thailand, you can help to turn the tide.
A huge disparity in income exists between the upper 30 percent and the rest of the population. The benefits of national growth have not been distributed equitably and many people have fallen further behind as others gained tremendously.
During its rapid growth during the 90's the Thai government failed to provide social safety for its people. The government over-prioritized financial and industrial reforms and neglected to formulate and implement a comprehensive social service program to protect the most unprepared sectors from the ill effects of rapid industrialization. By working in an HIV/AIDS Orphanage or an a single mothers home, you can create an immediate difference in Thailand, by providing support and helping those in need acquire the skills and knowledge to create their own independent future.
